United Kingdom Lubricants Association (UKLA) is to unveil new guidance on Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) at the Mach Exhibition on 4th to 8th April 2022.

The guidance, supported by the Health & Safety Executive, comes in response to end user concerns about the requirements for fitting LEV to new machine tools which are often sold without this facility.

An LEV allows for the extraction of metalworking fluid mist from enclosures in close proximity to machine operators and is essential for reducing possible health risks associated with the inhalation of metalworking fluid mist.

Kevin Duncan, Chairman of UKLA’s Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group said: “Local Exhaust Ventilation is essential for keeping machine operators safe and machine shops healthy. This guidance will be invaluable for employers to safeguard the health and well-being of their colleagues.”

Gareth Evans, HSE said: “Local Exhaust Ventilation systems helps fulfil the statutory requirement for employers to demonstrate a duty of care to their employees by taking reasonable precautions to safeguard their health.”
